Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't
Приєднався 25 вер 2009
A Low-Brow, Crass Approach to Plant Ecology & Evolution as muttered by a Misanthropic Chicago Italian. We study plants through the lens of ecology and evolution, rather than what supposed anthropocentric uses they can provide (as if holding up the biosphere wasn't enough).

East Austin Succulents is a massive cactus & succulent nursery located in Austin Texas.
Your contributions support this content. It sounds cliché but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD is willing to do whatever it takes to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...

At an elevation of 6600 ft we check out a cool plant community with a substrate of calcareous shale consisting of some very cryptic cacti as well as the magnificent Dasylirion longissimum. Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus has been under the selection pressures of this uplifted calcareous and shale substrate for millions of years, giving it the ability to hide amongst the different tones of gray, oran...

Addendum: After corresponding with Dr. Michael Windham at Duke University who is an expert on Cheilanthoid Ferns (subfamily Cheilanthoideae in the fern family Pteridaceae) , the Astrolepis species featured here is actually new to science and has not been formally described. It was already on his radar. I thought it looked unusual. In this episode we take a trip to the high elevations of Queréta...
Rockwalls Are For Lovers w/ Strombocactus disciformis
Переглядів 19 тис.14 днів тому
Graced by the song of the giant cicada, we scope out a canyon at 4,000' elevation to check on some cool cacti. Along the way we pass by the edible Spondias purpurea (Anacardiaceae ) and Vallesia glabra (Apocynaceae). At the canyon slopes we see Lophophora diffusa (non-psychoactive peyote), the incredible Strombocactus disciformis, Mammillaria parkinsoniana, Coryphantha erecta, and Agave xylonac...
Rattlesnake Conservation in a Mexico City Apartment
Переглядів 15 тис.14 днів тому
In a small apartment in Mexico City César Flores Lopez is breeding some of the rarest snakes in North America in order to increase their numbers and reintroduce them into the habitats and regions that they call home, all of which are under increasing threats from both climate change and what CPBBD frequently refers to as "The Human Tumor" (unrestrained development) and habitat destruction. Than...
Habitat Destruction & Why the Term "Rescue" is Obnoxious
Переглядів 21 тис.21 день тому
In this episode we film more habitat destruction in South Texas, this time for the purposes of grazing cattle in a desert. Echinocereus enneacanthus, Coryphantha macromeris runyonii, Ancistrocactus scheeri and others are prevented from being destroyed in this act of senseless bulldozing. Ecotourism possibilities abound here due to the presence of numerous rare birds and cactus species and an ab...
Cicada Superbrood & Suburban Landscape Critique
Переглядів 26 тис.21 день тому
In Chicago we witness an epic "superbrood" as a result of convergent emergence of the 13 year and 17 year broods of Magicicada septendecim. Though it sure feels like there are much less than there were during the superbroods of the 90s, we still witness a deafening cacophony of these adorable winged little bastards and we also manage to get in some jabs at suburban landscaping and the lawn cult...

Hopefully this video doesn't piss too many people off as this is likely a new species that some may want to keep hush-hush, but it's also extremely cool, inspiring and exciting and I think it's important to show people that there is still so much left to be discovered that lies right under our noses. Much respect to Deb Manley who discovered this species and will describe it. Your contributions...

Stop whining about ticks and go out there and check out your native flora. In this episode we scope out a recently bulldozed site to see the native plants that have come back to recolonize the destruction. West Texas Native Plant Landscaping (Pro Jahb)

In this episode we harass my friend Michael Eason, one of the best botanists in Texas, collections manager at San Antonio Botanical Garden, and professional landscaper, to see the kind of work he does with native plants - many of them rare - for his professional landscaping business. Though many things were not flowering this time of year, since spring is often very dry in West Texas, we are st...

I didn't know how much I needed to hear a guy with this accent getting this engrossed about what is essentially just shit coming out of the ground.10/10
Populations don't mutate; individuals do?
Yeah, but populations decide whether mutations get inherited.
Absolutely love East Austin Succulents! Just took a roadtrip to Austin from Oregon in December and they were on the top of my list. I was like a kid in a candy store!
Also, Joey, it just warms my heart that you're getting a little more 'woo' with talking to your plants. You're absolutely right, they're living beings, not objects. And having been among Eric's collection, I think that additional attention really shows.
Good shit! I just subscribed to Cactus Quest's channel.
He's great! Was glad to see his channel get a plug.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold.
WHY IS THE ACENT SO CHARMING? Hilarious Nad cute, too!😂😂
How do you remember all these names of the different plants wow mind blown away ❤❤❤❤❤❤ you are truly teaching me some things I never knew thanks so much
❤❤So happy I found a nature lover who has no filters 😂😂😂😂like myself 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
If they had some kind of lattice work under the bridges sturdy enough for stray cats to navigate…maybe there would be fewer pigeons.
Fewer pigeons, more toxoplasmosis
man i love the diversity of cacti!! and i love pigeons. always bums me out how we domesticated tonnes of pigeons for human purposes and then kicked them out to become labeled as dirty pests. and then there’s shit like the passenger pigeon - native to north america, unlike the feral rock doves - that was hunted to extinction for cheap meat. hey, sometimes i think we deserve to be shat on by street pigeons 🕊️
Watching these plants... My jaw is on the ground......
DISC GOLF!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LETS GO!!!!!!!!!
Love the thumbnail art!
Enjoyed this tour! Holly shit. That was some cool stuff. Love seeing a passion flourish. You guys touching every cactus! Haha always makes me recognize how brave and knowledgeable you gotta be to touch em just right. In nature I pick up a nice stick to tickle the plants I shouldn’t touch. Something about cactuses.. I just want to touch them so bad. Oh man horse cripplers how sad A+ content as always tony, aloha~
Goddamn bridgesii just melt in the humidity man, at the very least theyll get black leaky blisters. But you can find clones that are hardy to it and champ my environment. Eileen has never been phased by the swamp 😂
And Pizza should not take an Hour to bake.
My house was too dry to grow jungle plants, so I went to cacti. I am trying different types to see what likes my environment. I live in upper Michigan, so the cactus live under lights in the winter. In the summer it doesn't usually go above 80 degrees, so the South American cacti seem to like it here. We have had several nights go into the 40s. I worry about the Mexican mams, but not the Copiapoa. I mist them, but rarely water them. I really enjoyed this video, since I actually recognized the names of plants.
Hey Al! Well put concept in beauropathology! Seems accountability of gov & corporations is decreasing, and esp. when communicatng digitally, not face-to-face as citizens accntbility increases. I was raised by my grandparents and I knew 'passin the buck', 'month of sundays' and 'cooking w/ gas' by age 8.
streets are still cleaner then San Francisco :)
I'm mostly in to Philodendrons but I've started a small cactus collection. I don't know what kind - 2 of them are very hairy but they look different from each other. One of my other cactus is blue with chevron stripes, and one has the longest thorns I've ever seen. I've had them for a couple of years and it's just so satisfying to see them grow every year. I mean it's such a low effort plant and adds so much to a space. So fascinating to see a green house that specializes in these. So awesome.
Wow, that astrophytum pstch.... damn
Thank you birch
What a cool place
rhyming birch with bird shit is amazing XD
Ended on a perfect note.
Tell me you’re from New York without telling me you’re from New York.
Im sure there is no coincidence that Bird shit and Birch sound very similar in your musical accent 🤔🤔🤔
I'm curious about who was the mentor who was the best echeveria grower?
I say Jim Small in Bastrop. He was Lost Pines Nursery.
